This wonderful tour covers the magnificent area of Dutch polder landscape north of Amsterdam, marked by windmills, lakes, dikes and ditches. This tour is decidedly a favorite #1 among my guests.
We commence our tour with a visit at the newly built townhall of Zaanstad (ZaanCity). I promise that you have never seen such a building before in your lifetime.
You will experience Dutch heritage with visits at cosy Edam and the Zaanse Schans, an old windmill area with a wooden shoe factory, cheese farm and a diamond factory.
You can enter the historic windmills and experience how products were fabricated 150-200 years ago. Demonstrations wooden shoes- and cheese making are part of the program.
And if you like, I'll arrange a private demonstration diamond cutting and polishing (see also my Diamond Tour page).
We continue to Volendam and make a 20 minutes boat ride to Marken, fishermen's village along the former Zuiderzee.
Marken used to be an island until it was connected to the mainland by a dam. Some people of both places still wear the traditional costumes. A little stroll across this cosy and picturesque island.
The last stop is Monnickendam, a historic (1350) former fishing town.
During the day you will travel on small scenic country roads, where tour busses are not allowed. The area is called 'Waterland' and is situated 8-12 feet below sealevel.
